Sometimes I almost laugh at the slander and libel laws in the U.K. Then I read a story where guys like Haster and LaRouche (odd pairing isn't it) use the lack of laws to their benefit. Maybe the Brits have something with those laws.
Of course, if you have a track-record of lying in the U.S. it is harder to be sued. The problem is, in our culture someone can say the lie and then deny it over and over and the damage is already done.

Note: I think the referenced article above is a pretty lame... really lame article but I thought the facts therein were very interesting.
